PLANTING & STORAGE
When should fall bulbs be planted?
The general rule of thumb is to plant when the soil temperatures in your zone reach approximately 55°F and nighttime temperatures stay between 40° and 50°F.
How late can I plant fall bulbs?
For the most part, as long as you are able to dig into the ground you can plant (especially with daffodils).
From the time of first frost in your zone, you have 6-8 weeks left of planting time.
How do I store bulbs prior to planting?
Bulbs must be stored in a cool, dry area with excellent ventilation.
Bulbs are tough, and temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees won't bother them, however colder is always better in this case.
Are your bulbs treated with neonicotinoids?
Our Dutch growing operation, Ruigrok Flower Bulbs, is MPS certified (More Profitable Sustainability) under certificate number 910175 and neonicotinoids are never used on our family farms. Many of our partner growers have also undergone the same certification process.
In regards to the flower bulb sector as a whole, pesticide use is heavily regulated in the Netherlands, and extensive research has been done on this topic. Please find several statements from the Anthos Royal Dutch Trade Association for Flowerbulbs and Nursery Stock at the bottom of this page.
CULTURAL
Which tulip varieties will come back the following year?
In our experience, no tulip variety can be guaranteed to return the following year which is why we market our tulip bulbs as annuals.
In Holland, tulips return with ease due to the sandy soil (perfect for drainage), cool spring weather (allows foliage to hang around and return energy to the bulb) and harvest techniques. In the USA, customers want their blooms to last as long as possible, whereas in Holland, our farm will remove the tulip heads after one week of flowering. The tulip bloom requires a lot of energy, thus stressing the bulb and preventing it from producing the large bulb that would be necessary for perennialization the following year.
That being said, some groups have stronger perennial tendencies than others. Darwin Hybrid's, Fosteriana, Greigii's, Kaufmanniana, & Specie tulips offer the best odds. Make sure to always apply a good nitrogen based fertilizer like Espoma Bulb-tone as well.
DAFFODIL SIZING EXPLAINED:
Daffodils are advertised in a variety of different sizes and ways throughout the industry (many of which are unclear or incorrect). This is due to confusion associated with the now defunct "old" grading system, and the current grading system. Dutch and United Kingdom grown daffodils are also graded & labeled in different ways. United Kingdom (or UK) daffodils are graded using a long slot riddle whereas Dutch daffodils are graded using a round riddle (the same way tulips are graded). The most important rule of thumb is as follows:
Dutch size DN1 = UK size 16+ cm (A select few varieties can produce a bulb like this. These are exhibition sized bulbs)
Dutch size DN2 = UK size 14/16 cm (Considered top size by today's standards. We strive to offer as many varieties as possible in this class)
Dutch size DN3 = UK size 12/14 cm (Most commonly marketed size)
Dutch & UK Size 10/12 cm (Generally found in big box stores)
