Astrantia 'Star of Billions' is a floriferous perennial known for its dome-shaped clusters of tiny pink flowers, surrounded by elegant papery bracts. Blooming from late spring to early summer, it thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil and prefers partial to full shade. Its deeply cut green foliage adds texture, while its long-lasting blooms attract pollinators and make excellent cut flowers. Resistant to deer and tolerant of wet conditions, it is a valuable addition to woodland gardens and shaded borders.
Planting: Set bare-root divisions 2 to 3 inches deep, ensuring the crown is just below the soil surface. Best planted in spring or fall, preferring cool, moist conditions.
Location: Thrives in partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun with ample moisture.
Soil: Requires rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist; drought can cause stress and reduced flowering.
Spacing: Plant 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for clump expansion.
Fertilization: Apply organic compost or balanced fertilizer in early spring to support strong blooms.
Pruning: Cut back spent flowers to encourage reblooming; trim foliage in late winter before new growth emerges.
Propagation: Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring or fall.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free, though slugs and aphids may occasionally appear. Avoid excessive moisture to prevent fungal issues.
